MIME is an extension of the original Internet e-mail protocol that extends the limited capabilities of e-mail, containing non-textual data such as graphics files, audio, video, application programs, images, multimedia files, and other kinds as well as the ASCII text handled in the original protocol.

MIME was defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force in 1992. A new version called S/MIME supports encrypted messages too.
